Insurmountable Problems Beyond Your Control

Real life does not stop for university. The university acknowledges that people experience problems that interfere with their academic performance, and offers appropriate accommodations, such as deferral of exams. If your academic performance has been compromised by difficulties such as serious personal or medical problems, you should request accommodation. To receive such accommodation you will be required to prove to the university that the problems were indeed legitimate, and not just an excuse. You must supply documentation from an appropriate professional source such as a physician, counsellor, etc. See the university calendar ("Evaluation of Student Achievement") for current policies on this.

To qualify for such professional documentation, you must seek help when you are experiencing such difficulties, rather than later, for example, after you have gotten over the flu by yourself without visiting a physician.

The Learning Skills Program offers a number of resources in this area.

More on motivation.
