Surviving Relationship Breakup Group

Establishing and maintaining healthy connection in relationships is a basic human need. When a relationship breaks down the individual partners typically have strong emotional responses. Some individuals find the "emotional rollercoaster" they experience after a significant relationship has ended to interfere with their work or studies.

This group will meet for 5 sessions (2 hours each week for 5 weeks) to provide information and mutual support for university students who are coping with a relationship breakup. We will discuss relationship dynamics and strategies for: surviving the "emotional rollercoaster", coping and self-care, getting on with your life, choosing healthy relationships, communication and conflict resolution as well as other topics chosen by the group participants.

Call 250-721-8341 or come to Counselling Services for more information. Also refer to our Events webpage for information on this and other groups being offered this term.

Below are some anonymous comments from the evaluation of this group.

  • This was my first experience to enroll in a group workshop or a relationship workshop. It was a great help for my healing process. I'd like to take another workshop in future, this time focusing on the future relationships rather than old one.
  • One session can be 2 hours. Thank you for everything. I really appreciate it.
  • It would be nice to have longer sessions per meeting and more meetings as well. I feel that the workshop in general, was a great benefit to myself to allow me to function at a semi-normal state.
  • - Longer sessions in terms of hours & days.
    - This was very helpful but I have other issues that did not suit this setting.
    - Thanks for the handouts, they'll be excellent resources.
  • This workshop was excellent. The benefits can not be measured. Knowing that others are going through similar experiences and sharing the coping techniques was great. In the future there should be several more sessions as it seems that it ended as things were just opening up. Thank you.
  • I think this workshop was very helpful, and was very good in the open seminar style (w/group). I really liked the part on boundaries & self esteem. The healthy relationship part was very good too. It could have been longer and could have been extended for more sessions. I think it was very good meeting people in the same situation as myself. It was very good in looking for a good relationship in the future.
  • The workshop was quite useful. It was great to be able to get outside opinions & thoughts on the situation. Helped me to analyze the whole relationship better. The workshop helped to open up valuable resources and to make me aware of when I needed the resources. The course could perhaps be improved by lengthening it. More time to go into the issues in depth would be very helpful. Also if the course could be more mid-semester, rather than at the end.
  • I think the workshop is great. I feel it would be beneficial if the course/workshop could be longer in duration. This has been very rewarding and basically my salvation in coping. Thank you very much for all your support.
