Gaining Social Confidence

We are social beings and the longing for connections with others is universal. We all want to have friends, share conversational and maintain connections. Yet the fear of socializing can be a hindrance to making social connections here at UVic. Sometimes we can become very self conscious about our interactions of lack of interactions with others. This shyness can stop us from attempting to converse with classmates, or to explore possible friendships.

In this six to ten-session support group, we will heighten an awareness of yourself in relationship to self, others and within various situations. We will practice ways of speaking, sharing and interacting with others.

  1. Gain awareness of your anxiety, fear, worry or panic
  2. Learn ways to manage anxiety, fear, worry or panic
  3. How fearful thoughts stop us from taking action
  4. Finding your own level of comfort
  5. Expressing your ideas or opinions
  6. Meeting new people
  7. How to judge who would be a good friend
  8. Making eye contact
  9. Being able to say no
  10. Talking on the telephone
  11. Possible conversational ideas
  12. Social connections support our mental health and wellbeing.
