Managing Panic Attacks

Panic attacks come with general anxiety about the possibility of another attack. Although occasional panic attacks are common, they can develop into panic disorder or debilitating anxiety. People sometimes try to cope by avoiding situations when attacks are expected to occur. Or, they may have worries or unrealistic beliefs about these panics, such as, they being harmful. These behavioural avoidance and unrealistic beliefs in the long run may become detrimental as they may restrict people’s life and take quality of life or important relationships away.

Topics covered will include: understanding emotional, thinking, and physiological aspects of anxiety and panic attacks; learning relaxation and calming exercises; recognizing internal and external triggers of panic; designing and implementing planned exposure exercises; evaluating the impact of your thinking on your panic; and planning for future challenges of recurring panic attacks or increasing anxiety. The group structure will include teaching, discussions, and practice activities.
