Managing Cultural Adjustment

When individuals leave their own culture and move to another, they naturally carry their own background and life experience with them. No matter how well students prepare themselves before arriving at university, they are bound to experience some kind of culture shock and, as a result, find ways to adapt and survive.  For students with diverse cultural background, navigating university environment, at the same time dealing with personal and cultural challenges, can be overwhelming.

“Managing Cultural Adjustment” workshop , facilitated by professionals at the Counselling Services, is set up for participating students to offer emotional and practical support to each other to make this journey less stressful and more enjoyable. Topics covered will include: understanding stages of going through culture shock; recognizing emotional, cognitive, and physical signs of experiencing cultural adjustment; recognizing resources on and off-campus and practicing seeking help and reaching out; and learning strategies in dealing with stress and establishing sustainable lifestyle. The group structure will include teaching, discussions, and practice activities.
