Depression Management Program / Moving Beyond Depression/ ACT Group for Depression and Anxiety

 

Depression Management Program

Do you struggle with Depression? UVic Counselling Services will now offer an 8 to 10-week (one session per week) Depression Management Program. The program is based on Changeways, a program developed at the Department of Psychology at UBC Hospital. The program will provide clients with instruction in a variety of problem-solving, lifestyle management skills. The emphasis is on providing specific, research-based strategies for dealing with life problems. The content includes:

  • Identifying problems and transforming them into goals for change.
  • Breaking goals down into manageable steps.
  • Learning about stress.
  • The signs, symptoms, and causes of depression.
  • The effects of diet, exercise, sleep habits, caffeine and drugs and alcohol.
  • The importance of building recreation into one's daily life.
  • Strategies for developing a more satisfying social life.
  • An introduction to assertiveness skills.
  • Identifying negative and self-defeating thought patterns.
  • Learning to think in a more balanced and realistic manner.
  • Preventing mood problems from becoming unmanageable.

This group is free of charge.

 

Moving Beyond Depression

Moving Beyond Depression is a 6-week (one session per week) Depression Management Program. It is based on Changeways, a group program using empirically supported techniques developed at UBC Hospital's Department of Psychology. The program provides students with concrete tools, information and support for dealing with, and moving beyond, depression.

This group is free of charge.

 

ACT Group for Depression and Anxiety

ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is a scientifically tested, mindfulness based therapy useful in the treatment of depression and anxiety.

In this group we will explore what ACT is, and how to use the concepts and exercises to stop letting depression and anxiety be barriers to living your life.

Some topics include:

The role of avoidance strategies in maintaining depression and anxiety

Myths of anxiety and depression management

Introduction to and practice of mindful acceptance

Focus on values and life direction

This group is free of charge.
